Beautiful B&B
from TripAdvisor, Feb 8, 2007
My boyfriend and I went to the Speedwell Forge B&B for an escape from the noisy city. We stayed in the paymaster's suite, which is a separate little cottage with a fireplace and and a whirlpool bathtub. The space was absolutely beautiful, with its original 18th century architecture shining through, but enough modern amenities to make it as cozy and comfortable as possible. The owner, whose family has owned the property for the last seventy years, has done an amazing job preserving the beauty and charm of the spaces while updating everything just enough. We enjoyed the peace and quiet in our suite for an entire day and night, then ended our stay with a wonderful breakfast and tour of the house. There is also a wolf sanctuary on the property that exists to save wolves who would otherwise be put down for various reasons. We participated in the tour of the sanctuary which was definitely worth while. Speedwell Forge is the first B&B I have ever been to, but I can't imagine a more relaxing place to go. We had a wonderful time and would love to go back. I recommend this B&B to anyone who wants a little peace and quiet in a beautiful (non-Victorian style!) setting.

A History Worth Exploring

Our stay at the Speedwell Forge Bed & Breakfast was extraordinary. Dawn was an extremely welcoming hostess. The unique history of the house and her families ties to it are captivating. We spent a long time looking through the albums that she had collected of pictures from the restoration process. And being a photographer, I had a great time admiring all of the details that were obviously painstakingly thought of. You will not regret your stay at this B&B, tucked away on a lovely country road in Lancaster County, PA.

Relaxing Getaway

We chose Kathryn's room and were very happy with our selection. We checked into our room and were amazed at how beautiful and immaculate the room was...The pictures on the website looked exactly like what we encountered in person! The whole house was just as beautiful and as clean as our room. We had an enjoyable night's sleep and a wonderful breakfast the next morning. Dawn's three course breakfast was delicious! After breakfast, Dawn took us on an informal tour of the Wolf Sanctuary...This was a very special ending to our stay!

God's slice of heaven on earth

What a joy! My boyfriend and I are 20 somethings from New York City. The Paymaster's Office was like a dream come true for a quiet romantic vacation. There is nothing typical about this B&B, it exceeds all expectation. The room was immaculately restored, with no detail overlooked: the moldings and woodworking, the plush towels and robes available for your use, the bed linens and furnishings (perfectly of the historic period). The fireplace was the original beautiful facade, but was renewed to run on modern technology (we slept with it burning all night, perfect!) The jacuzzi tub for two was the ideal place to de-stress. The room also comes with a fully stocked kitchenette of basics: ingredients, and dishes (no oven, though-just the stove). But, we were so impressed that the room was bigger than most New York City apartments.

Our innkeeper, Dawn, was the most wonderful hostess. She prepared fantastic gourmet breakfasts that were gluten-free (on request). I haven't eaten delicious waffles with such worry-free abandon in as long as I can remember. Lovely table linens, and antique china add to the whole atmosphere of being utterly pampered. Dawn even went to the trouble of preparing homeade gluten-free walnut brownies for us to snack on. "You have to have some treats while you're on vacation!" she said. Such a doll.

Another highlight is the beautiful main house. It was a thrill for my musician boyfriend to discover a piano from the 1900's just waiting to be played in the living room. Speedwell Forge is an exceptional place. A definite must!

Beautifully restored romantic Inn

I'm so glad we chose Speedwell Forge Bed & Breakfast! The house has been immaculately restored and updated in many ways while retaining the period charm and grandeur of the property. The common rooms are lovely, inviting and comfortable. We stayed in Kathryn's Room, which was simply terrific for a romantic getaway! The bed was superbly plush and cozy, and the bathroom was an unbelievable treat with a tile floor heated from beneath and a beautiful glassed-in corner shower. Can we talk about the tub? I am a girl who likes a proper soak and the tub in Kathryn's room was one of the largest and most pleasant I have ever enjoyed. The breakfast was delicious, and Gregg and Dawn are great conversationalists and born innkeepers. Enjoy the "Journal" section of their website before you go!

Charming B&B

My husband and I stayed here for a couple of days in the lovely Kathryn's room. Boy, did we love it! The B&B has a charm you will only rarely find at other places and the owners, Dawn and Gregg, are the most lovely and sweet people you could ever meet! The room was very clean, the breakfast was sooooo tasty, and the hospitality was simply amazing! We will certainly return for another getaway trip!

Dutch country bed-and-breakfast offers a sense of warmth
Gwinnett Daily Post, 11/05/2006
Located among the region's rolling hills, pristine lakes and natural parks, this bed-and-breakfast in the town of Lititz is filled with tranquility and history. Built in 1760, the Speedwell Forge Mansion features original craftsmanship, seen in its hand-carved cupboards to its hardwood floors. The home sits on land that was once home to an iron forge. Massive stone walls, deep-paneled windows and high ceilings give this bed-and-breakfast a sense of stateliness. Spacious beds, romantic fireplaces, claw-foot whirlpool tubs and pedestal sinks characterize Speedwell Forge's retro appeal. Even though the bed-and-breakfast's rooms are appointed in a design of yesteryear, modern amenities are included here. If, for some reason, you need to be connected to the world, high-speed Internet access, TVs and DVD players are available. But why would you want to sit in front of a screen when you could spend a night by a fireplace, wrapped in an Amish quilt, soaking up the atmosphere? Top it all with eating a scrumptious three-course breakfast in the morning and you've got a perfectly relaxing trip.

Gluten-free paradise!

A wonderful time was had by my boyfriend and I on a romantic weekend away from New York City. No detail was overlooked in the pristine renovation or amenities offered to guests. The innkeeper, Dawn, is a delight. She prepared both gluten-free waffles (for breakfast) as well as yummy walnut brownies, calming all my celiac-related fears. She was so accommodating in making dinner reservations for us, as well as providing directions and maps to help us navigate downtown Lititz. We stayed in the Paymaster's Office, which induces relaxation in even the most tense travellers. It is private, quiet, and immaculately clean. The historic details of construction were preserved, and best of all is the fireplace. It's original facade is in tact, but has been updated to run on gas (perfect, we slept with it on through much of the night without any worries!) Sink into the double jacuzzi (equipped with bath-oil, and a rubber ducky), and wrap yourselves in the plush robes which are provided. This B&B is a very special place and a true labor of love. It's low-key, yet pampering, and definitely exceeds all expectation.

Awesome experience!!!

This place was first class. From the ease of reservations to checkout, it was GREAT! The place is amazing and breakfast was perfect. Can't wait to visit again.
